Sagayan Festival Exhibits War Dance of the Maranaos

Sagayan Festival Exhibits War Dance of the Maranaos

In celebration of the 58th Araw ng Lanao del Norte, the provincial government through the Provincial Tourism Office organized a competition featuring the cultural heritage of the Maranao tribe as one of the fiercest warriors in the Philippines. Sagayan Festival is a war dance depicting in theatrical manner the steps of Prince Bantugan, hero of the Maranao and the Maguindanao people. In this dance it portrays the battle that Prince Bantugan have fought and won to rescue his sister abducted by the other tribe.

Representatives of the different municipalities of the Province of Lanao del Norte performed this ritual dance of the warriors carrying armaments, shields, shell noisemakers and double bladed swords which completes the traditional dress of the early warriors of Lanao. The performers dance along to the beat of the kolintang, agong and dadabwaan (traditional Muslim instruments) illustrating how Prince Bantugan and his warriors bravely faced the enemy who abducted his sister.

In this year’s competition Lala National High School won the prestigious title as Grand Champion. Geronima Cabrera National High School of Kolambugan bagged 1st runner-up followed by Maigo National High School. Consolation prizes were given to Teofila Quibranza National High School of Pualas, Tubod; Lala Proper Integrated High School; Magsaysay National High School; and Marcela B. Mabanta National High School of Kauswagan.

Provincial Governor Imelda “Angging” Quibranza-Dimaporo and 2nd District Representative, Congressman Abdullah “Bobby” Dimakuta Dimaporo along with the Board Members and the Municipal Mayors were elated to have witnessed the presentation together with Undersecretary Harold E. Clavite, Director General of the Philippine Information Agency who also comes from the Municipality of Baroy of this province. Usec Clavite was so happy that he was invited to be one of the judges of this cultural show. Governor Angging and Congressman Bobby thanked the school principals who have joined in this celebration of the 58th Araw ng Lanao del Norte. This Sagayan Festival could not have happened without the support given by the Municipal Mayors and the School Principals in spite of the security threats in connection to the crisis in Marawi City.

Araw ng Lanao del Norte is an annual celebration showcasing the unity among Muslims and Christians working as one in achieving the vision of the province by respecting and understanding each other’s culture and religion. This unity is a legacy of the Quibranza-Dimaporo which the people of Lanao del Norte deeply appreciates. This year’s theme formulated by Governor Imelda Quibranza-Dimaporo “Lanao del Norte: Hulagway sa Himsug nga Katawhan og Malinawong Katilingban” (Lanao del Norte: Portrait of Healthy People and Peaceful Society).

Sagayan Festival was held in Mindanao Civic Center Stadium in “The Land of Beauty and Bounty” on July 2, 2017 in celebration of the 58th Araw ng Lanao del Norte. PIO-LDN
