Tubod, Lanao del Norte – More than 200 players and coaches from 10 municipalities of this progressive province joined the opening ceremony of the 7th Governor’s Cup Lawn Tennis Tournament.
The official launching ceremony for this province-wide tournament was held on April 18, 2015 at the tennis courts’ section of the provincial capitol grounds, in capital town Tubod.
“Despite being in his last term as Chief Executive of Lanao del Norte, Governor Khalid Dimaporo is still very much aggressive in promoting sports here in Lanao del Norte. Aside from football and basketball, tennis is perhaps the most popular sport here in Lanao del Norte”, noted Provincial Information Officer Lyndon Calica.
Among the towns that participated in the anticipated tournament are Linamon, Bacolod, Maigo, Magsaysay, Salvador, Sultan Naga Dimaporo (SND), Tubod, Baroy, Lala and Kapatagan.
One of the highlights of the opening rites is the cheerdance contest participated by tennis clubs from Baroy, Salvador, and Bacolod. Baroy won the top spot plus P5- thousand pesos cash prize; Salvador got second place and P3-thousand pesos; while Bacolod won third place with P2-thousand pesos cash prize.
After the launching ceremony, participating clubs joined the fellowship lunch hosted by Gov. Khalid Dimaporo, 1st District Representative Imelda Quibranza-Dimaporo, and 2nd District Representative Abdullah Dimaporo.
The hosting of sports competitions and tournaments is the initiative of Governor Dimaporo under his Sports Development Program.
Tennis matches for the 7th Governor’s Cup Lawn Tennis Tournament will be played during weekends at identified tennis courts of participating municipalities.
Championship matches will be one of the highlight during the ‘Araw ng Lanao del Norte’ celebrations come July 2015.
