Tubod, Lanao del Norte – More than 60 teams participated in the province-wide basketball tournament hosted by the provincial government of Lanao del Norte dubbed as ‘1st Governor’s Cup Basketball Tournament’. The tournament is aimed at promoting not only the sport of basketball among young residents but more importantly to encourage them to go into sports and practice a healthy lifestyle.
The three-month long competition is organized by the provincial LGU through its Provincial Community Affairs Office (PCAO).
“Aside from promoting sports among the youth, we are also in the lookout for standout basketball talents that we could develop more to represent Lanao del Norte in future competitions”, said Provincial Sports Coordinator Nelson Lasola.
The tournament is part of the Sports Development Program of the province implemented under the ‘Kabataan Sigurado’ initiative of Governor Khalid Dimaporo. The sports initiative is also supported by Provincial Board members Harris Ali (Sports Committee) and Jack Maruhom (Ways & Means Committee).
Elimination games for barangay, municipal, and provincial-level are held every Saturday and Sunday.
The tournament started on March 28, 2015 with elimination games at the barangay level. Teams earning the top rank move on to the municipal-level elimination round. Winners from every municipality will then compete for the coveted Governor’s Cup in the provincial level.
Among the towns participating in the tournament includes Linamon, Kauswagan, Bacolod, Maigo, Kolambugan, Tubod and Baroy representing the 1st District; Sultan Naga Dimaporo, Magsaysay, Sapad, Tangkal, Salvador, Kapatagan, and Lala for the 2nd District.
The Championship games are set to be played during the 56th Araw ng Lanao del Norte celebration come July 2015. LAR & VNL/PIO-LDN
