Visitors and local residents check the various organic products showcased by the municipal LGU during the Agri-Aqua Expo held at the Kapatagan Freedom park.
Tubod, Lanao del Norte – In celebration of their 66th ‘Araw ng Kapatagan’, municipal officials of this progressive town is reaffirming their commitment to promote organic farming among local farmers.
“Though organic farming is still in its infancy stage when compared to Dumingag (town), we aim to continue promoting and supporting organic farming here in Kapatagan”, declared Kapatagan Mayor Benjie Baguio.
Organic farming only uses natural fertilizers and pesticides, this includes bone meal from animals and pyrethrin from flowers. It prohibits the use of synthetic petrochemical fertilizers and pesticides on crops and livestocks.
The commitment to go green was amplified by Mayor Baguio during the official launching of the town’s Agri-Aqua Expo held at the Kapatagan Freedom park on July 5, 2015.
In Mindanao, the municipality of Dumingag has been leading the way in the implementation of organic farming and have produced many success stories on their continiuing implementation of the ecology-friendly program.
“Organic farming produces a fruits and vegetables that are free from synthetic pesticides and its harmful effects to the human body. This explains why organic products are sold at a higher price than regular produce”, explained Dumingag Mayor nacianceno Pacalioga, Jr.
Mayor Baguio and Vice-Mayor Perlito Gonzaga have been the staunch advocates of organic farming in Kapatagan town. By working together, both leaders have created a Kapatagan that is not only fast becoming the commercial hub of the province but also a model of environmental preservation.
“Being in my last term as the Chief Executive of Kapatagan and together with Vice-Mayor Gonzaga, I want the people to remember us as the leaders who stood united for the development and progress of Kapatagan. Because without unity there can be no true and genuine development”, said Mayor Baguio. VNL/PIO-LDN
