All government and non-governmental agencies, such as the Department of Health and the Department of Social Welfare and Development are enjoined to collaborate and cooperate with the Philippine Society of Hypertension in advocating and implementing activities to prevent and control hypertension and its cardiovascular complication.
Proclamation No. 1761, Series of 2009, declaring the month of May of each year as “HYPERTENSION AWARENESS MONTH”, with this the Department of Health in coordination with the Provincial Health Office set-up tables in the lobby of Gov. Arsenio A. Quibranza Provincial Government Center from May 29 to 30 and in Mindanao Civic Center Sports Complex the following day, this is to encourage provincial government employees avail the services offered by DOH. Doctors and nurses were present to screen employees, monitor blood pressure prior to medical check-up then provide necessary information on how to avoid such medical condition. The impact of hypertension that causes premature death and disability also affects the national productivity and socio-economic development of the country. Based on the studies of DOH, hypertension is the number one cause of illness and is the leading contributor to premature death of Filipinos within the country that reaches up to 200,000 deaths yearly attributed directly or indirectly to High blood pressure.
High Blood Pressure also known as hypertension where the walls of the arteries are receiving too much pressure repeatedly, it is a condition that if not regularly monitored can cause heart disorders such as heart failure, ischemic heart disease, hypertensive heart disease, and left ventricular hypertrophy (excessive thickening of the heart muscle).
During the presentation of Ms. Cheryl Cabañeros, registered Nurse from DOH noted that there are two types of Hypertension, the Primary (essential) hypertension that will gradually develop over the years and Secondary hypertension and adverse effect caused by an underlying condition that tends to appear suddenly and cause higher blood pressure than Primary hypertension.
Board Member Harris Umpa-Ali also shared in his message the importance of healthy living through exercise and healthy diet, hydration is one of many simple ways that is overlooked by the people that is essential in maintaining a healthy body. Provincial Governor of Lanao del Norte, Imelda “Angging” Quibranza-Dimaporo clearly emphasized the importance of monitoring one’s blood pressure to prevent unnecessary incident. The Governor supports the Society of Hypertension and continued by sharing her healthy living habits by staying strong and healthy in order to keep up with her hectic schedule in serving the people of the Province of Lanao del Norte.
Doctors and nurses from the Provincial Hospital together with the Provincial Health Office performed minor medical check-up to employees of the Provincial Capitol. Employees that have been diagnosed with hypertension were encouraged to enlist in the DOH Hypertension and Diabetes Registry and Club for regular check-ups and for maintenance of medicines like Losartan and Amlodipine.
