A young player from Central Mindanao University (CMU) strikes for a goal during the 56th Araw ng Lanao del Norte Football Festival at MCC football field, in Tubod town.
Tubod, Lanao del Norte – 84 teams from all over Visayas and Mindanao participated in the recently concluded 56th Araw ng Lanao del Norte Football Festival held at the sprawling Mindanao Civic Center sports complex.
The two-day competition was organized by the Provincial Government of Lanao del Norte in partnership with the Iligan-Lanao del Norte Football Association (ILNOFA).
“We are happy that our Football Festival here is gaining popularity among football clubs in Visayas and Luzon. We are seeing more and more teams joining us each year”, expressed ILNOFA President Lemuel Mapula.
Participating clubs compete in 10-Under Category, 12-Under Category, 15-Under Category, 17-Under Category, Ladies Open Category, Men’s Open Category and 38 and Above Category.
Winners of the Lanao del Norte Football Festival include DMC FC of Dipolog City (Champion), Advocates FC of Iligan City (1st Runner-up), ABC FC from Dipolog City (2nd Runner-up), and Go HERMIE FC of Oroquieta City (3rd Runner-up).
The Lanao del Norte football team has been quite successful in recent tournaments attended like the Under-23 Suzuki Cup and PFF-SMART Club Tournament.
“Governor Khalid Dimaporo wanted us to train young athletes with the potential to excel in football. By training kids at the grassroots level, we are now starting to see those trainings paying off”, explained Provincial Boardmember Harris Ali. Ali is the former president of ILNOFA and the present Sanggunian Panlalawigan Chairman of the Committee on Sports and Youth Development.
The provincial government is regularly organizing football clinics in public schools in different towns of Lanao del Norte. Several students who are football standouts have received scholarships and now plays for top universities in Metro Manila.
Azkals Team Captain Chieffy Caligdong is set to conduct another free football clinic for Lanao del Norte students on July 11 and 12, 2015 at MCC football field.
The ‘Araw ng Lanao del Norte’ Football Festival is an annual sports initiative under the ‘Kabataan Sigurado’ program of Governor Khalid Dimaporo. VNL/PIO-LDN
