August 6 of this year, the Department of Health declared a national dengue epidemic and urged all its Regional Offices to step up dengue surveillance, case management, and outbreak response. And in the same month, DOH Region 10 and Save the Children Philippines responded to the outbreak by coordinating with the Provincial Government of Lanao del Norte through the Provincial Health Office and Municipal Health Offices and the Department of Education.

The Municipalities of Sultan Naga Dimaporo, Kapatagan, and Kolambugan were recommended to receive the needed response by the Provincial Health Office based on the submitted cases reported by the Municipal Health Offices.

Save the Children Philippines responded by providing cleaning materials, conducted community-led and student-led dengue information and clean-up drives, delivered dengue and polio information print materials and mosquito repellants, and produced five series of contextual audio-visual communication materials. All of these aside from the Misting Machines were made possible in partnership with the local health workers, barangay officials, teachers, and schoolchildren. “Student Dengue Patrollers” were organized in schools to continue disseminating dengue information and to create sustainable prevention activities.

In partnership with the Local Government Units and the Department of Education with the assistance of the Provincial Health Office, Save the Children Philippines successfully facilitated the dengue epidemic response in the following barangays and schools of the aforementioned Municipalities: Sultan Naga Dimaporo- Barangays Dableston, Dangoloan, and Mamagum, and the Elementary Schools of Dableston and Dangoloan, and Mamagum Integrates School; Kapatagan: Barangays Bansarvil, Poblacion, and Lapinig, and the Elementary & National High School of Bansarvil, Kapatagan East Central School. Kolambugan-Barangays Poblacion, Caromatan, Titunod, and Libertad, and the Elementary Schools of Guillermo A. Gimeno, Riverside, and Esmeraldo Roque Memorial Elementary School, and Manga Integrated School.

Provincial Governor Imelda ‘Angging’ Quibranza-Dimaporo despite her hectic schedule made sure to attend the Dengue Epidemic Response Culminating Activity and Turn-Over Ceremony and to personally extend her gratitude to the officers and staff of Save the Children Philippines headed by Project Officer Meikko Jay D. Forones, and to meet the “Dengue Patrollers.”

Project Officer Forones discussed the Dengue Response Gains and Milestones in Lanao del Norte and Iligan, and Surveillance Officer Louie Arancon presented DOH’s Region 10 Dengue Surveillance Updates.

A Plaque of Appreciation was given to the Provincial Government of Lanao del Norte and was humbly received by Governor Angging together Dr. Melania A. Untao, the Provincial Health Officer, for the invaluable contribution in leading to the success of the dengue epidemic response in the province. The provincial government also received two (2) Misting Machines as a donation from Save the Children Philippines.
