The Provincial Government of Lanao del Norte through the Provincial Health Office and United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) conducted “Training on Nutrition in Emergencies” from August 30 to September 1, 2018 at Mindanao Civic Center Hotel Function Hall, Sagadan, Municipality of Tubod.

The conduct of the training is to increase the nutrition literacy of a broad range of people who have an involvement in nutrition – related emergency responses, in Lanao del Norte, public health practitioners and health personnel. Moreover, the training provides a unique opportunity to strengthen organizational capacity to respond effectively in emergencies.

The training aims to bring everyone up to internationally recognized standards and to share experience and knowledge about best practices and challenges in nutrition responses during emergencies.

Breastfeeding was thoroughly emphasized in the training which is vital in providing every child with the healthiest start to life. It is a baby’s first vaccine and the best source of nutrition, and can bolster brain development.

The activity was attended by health officers from the provincial government and municipal government units of Lanao del Norte.

In the afternoon of the same day, Provincial Health Officer, Dr. Melania A. Untao leads the graduates who have completed the Basic Training Course for Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS) in the Municipality of Baroy held at Sangguniang Bayan Hall.

The Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNSs) are community – based volunteers who assist in the delivery of nutrition and related services in the barangays and their deployment in every barangay is mandated by Presidential Decree (PD) 1569 otherwise known as “Strengthening the Barangay Nutrition Program by Providing a Barangay Nutrition Scholar in Every Barangay, Providing Funds Thereof and for Other Purposes.” This law mandates mandates the National Nutrition Council (NNC) to administer the BNS Program in coordination with local government units (LGUs) and as such is tasked to develop capacities of BNSs.

The Provincial Government of Lanao del Norte through the leadership of Governor Imelda ‘Angging’ Quibranza-Dimaporo, the two Congressmen, 1st District Representative, Congressman Mohamad Khalid Quibranza Dimaporo and 2nd District Representative, Congressman Abdullah ‘Bobby’ Dimakuta Dimaporo, and the Honourable Members of Sangguniang Panlalawigan continuously support the program of NCC in the province through the Provincial Health Office headed by Dr. Melania A.
