16 Police Officers from different Municipalities of Lanao del Norte joins the Campaign Against Rabies in line with the observance of Rabies Awareness Month this March. An Orientation and Seminar on Animal Welfare, Rabies Laws and Rabies was the subject discussed during the activity spearheaded by the Provincial Veterinary Office and Network for Animals at Macapagal Training Center on February 7, 2018.

This activity is in accordance to Republic Act No. 9482, “Anti-Rabies Act of 2007” and Republic Act No. 10631, “Animal Welfare Act of 1998”.

Dr. Medino Yebron from the Network of Animals leads the orientation and calls the PNP personnel to help disseminate information awareness that would prevent and eradicate the spread of rabies to humans and animals for the safety of the general public. Dr. Yebron as well appealed to PNP to apprehend individuals who have committed abuses to animals as it is punishable by law.

According to Dr. Medino, Rabies Virus incubation period usually progresses in just few days after being bitten by an infected animal but there are reported instances that it took years before taking effect. Rabies has high fatality rate but also highly preventable. Common source of this deadly virus are dogs, the primary cause of rabies transmission while other identified contributors are cats, rodents, bats and several livestock.

The theme for this year’s Rabies Awareness Month is “Barangay Kaagapay, Laban sa Rabies Tagumpay.” The Provincial Veterinary Office headed by Dr. Fritzie P. Provido is the forefront agency of the Provincial Government of Lanao del Norte in achieving the goal of a rabies-free Lanao del Norte by 2020. Pet owners are encouraged to regularly vaccinate their pets particularly dogs. On March 24, 2018 at Mindanao Civic Center Sports Complex, a “Fun Dog Show” has been organized to showcase the ability and skills of these loving and friendly being. The campaign of a rabies-free province is supported by the Department of Agriculture, Department of Health, Department of the Interior and Local Government and Department of Education.

The Provincial Government of Lanao del Norte takes priority the safety and well-being of its constituents. The leadership of Provincial Governor Imelda ‘Angging’ Quibranza-Dimaporo with the unwavering support of the two District Representatives, 1st District Congressman Mohamad Khalid Quibranza Dimaporo and 2nd District Congressman Abdullah ‘Bobby’ Dimakuta Dimaporo recognizes the importance of eradicating rabies in the province.
