Tubod, Lanao del Norte – After taking home the coveted Sinulog trophy and being proclaimed as the Grand Showdown champion of Sinulog 2016, the provincial government of this progressive province hosted a victory party for its Sinulog contingent on February 9, 2016 at MCC pool area, Brgy. Sagadan, Tubod town.
The Lanao del Norte contingent more widely known in Cebu City as “˜Land of Beauty and Bounty” bested 14 other contingents in the highly competitive Free Interpretation category.
The “Land of Beauty and Bounty” performing group is consists of 96 dancers, 20 ritualists, 200 propsmen, and 35 instrumentalists.
The contingent also has its own medical team, documentation team, carpenters, drivers, food personnel, working committee and even an internal security group making this year’s contingent the biggest delegation sent by the provincial government to the annual Sinulog Festival.
“We are thankful to all the faculty and staff of Bansarvil National High School, to all the parents, to Governor Khalid Dimaporo, Vice-Governor Cristy Atay, all the provincial boardmembers, to Congresswoman Angging Dimaporo, to all our working committees and to everyone who contributed in one way or another to this victory, I am truly, truly grateful”, expressed Provincial Tourism Officer and Sinulog Delegation Head Minda Regis.
Dancers are composed of public school students from Bansarvil National High School of the coastal town of Kapatagan.
During the victory party, the Sinulog performers were given access to the two Olympic-sized swimming pools at the Mindanao Civic Center sports complex. The jubilant group was also entertained by the PGLDN band who performed some of the latest chart topping songs to the delight of the young crowd.
Later in the afternoon, the contingent made a repeat performance of their winning dance routine that bagged them the Sinulog championship.
“We wanted to show to the people in Cebu, and those who watched the competition around the world that here in Lanao del Norte, Muslims and Christians live harmoniously with one another. Winning the championship trophy was only a bonus for us”, explained Governor Khalid Dimaporo.
Other awards given to Lanao del Norte were “Best in Costume”, “Most Disciplined Contingent”, and “Best in Musicality”. The unique beat and music of Lanao del Norte which also featured a Maranao music segment was performed by the Brothers Classic.
The chief choreographer of the “Land of Beauty and Bounty” contingent is Mark Eric Debalucos.
Lanao del Norte group was led by Diana Therese Mejorada who is also the reigning Ms. Lanao del Norte.
The Lanao del Norte contingent showcased its “Sagayan” dance. Sagayan is a Maranao war dance performed to ward off evil spirits. The dancers of the contingent performed a modernized version of the Darangen, a Maranao epic story, depicting two warring groups that were eventually reconciled and united by Bai-A-Labi who succeeded in bringing lasting peace.
